The Book-y Monster

I think Nayt would prove a fine asset to a magazine. He has a way of mastering intrigue and brevity. Nevermind his use of philosophical words and lingo I don’t understand. Contextuality usually rushes in to aid my non-philosopher brain.
But I thought I should write something. After all, Nayt can’t have the full [...]

Complexity

Last week got a bit crazy, but I wanted to comment on the weekend that Dave talked about complexity.
Part of me falls under the spell of Paley’s watchmaker analogy; that is, if you found a pocket watch in a field you would assume it didn’t just happen—it’s too complicated with interdependent parts. Pop [...]

Worst Hit Man Ever

My favorite story this month is about the hit man who was allegedly hired by a husband to kill his wife, a 51-year old nurse. The alleged hit man whacked the nurse with a hammer, which only pissed her off, so she strangled the hit man with her bare hands.

Awe

Today at church Dave spoke about awe and creativity. He gave one example about how amazing it is that we are even alive because of the complexity of a cell. Dave did not really go into to much detail about it though, so I was thinking I would write something about cells, Mitochondrial DNA, and evolutionary biology, [...]

Unpeeling the soul

Yesterday I spent the day organizing more of the apartment that Nayt and I share. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment when the house not only looks cleaner, but also has a designated place for things that used to just lay around. But I had to admit I got frustrated with the “forced” [...]

Religion in Politics

I can’t decide if I prefer the candidate for President who says we should consider all the facts before deciding when to withdraw troops from Iraq or the one who says we should consider all the facts before deciding when to withdraw troops from Iraq.
On a marginally related note, I can’t help wondering whether McCain [...]
